Gear noise
OK so I got my new gears for the Precedent with a Graziano rear end. They are pretty noisey, I know the problem is the gear set came with 2 new gears and I did not replace the main ring gear. My question is, what do you do for noisey gears?
I have had this problem before with EZGO input gears when the shaft strips out just kinda delt with it.. Figured I would tap into this wealth of knowledge and see what others are doing. |

Re: Gear noise
Never done one on a golf cart but did you check the preload and the backlash using gear paint before completing the assembly. Not even sure if this is a procedure on these but on good old fashioned rear differentials on larger vehicles it's necessary.

Re: Gear noise
No preload that I am aware of. Really no shims anywhere.

Re: Gear noise
I'll have to leave this to the real experts on carts then. Seems odd to me but maybe it's because they are low speed and one 'gear'.

Re: Gear noise
For gear noise on these, put universal ATF in it and run it for about 30 minutes at different speeds.
Then drain the ATF out and refill with SAE30 dino oil. That will help the new gears break in some. Or the noise could be something else like a motor bearing or a damaged bearing in the case. I'm not sure with the electric axles, but did you have to press the shaft bearings off and back on? If so, Did you use new bearings? |

Re: Gear noise
I did replace some bearings yes and pressed them on. So this morning I pulled it back down and tried several different things as far as making shims to move the position of the teeth and just different stuff. No matter what I do the noise is from the new intermediate gear to the old ring gear. I am sure it just the wear pattern on the old gear. Guess I will need a new ring gear. I had to go with the high speed gears since I cant find a new input shaft and not sure I wouldnt have the same problem just different.

Re: Gear noise
Did you rule out the motor bearing as the source of the noise ? I'm working with one of those right now.

Re: Gear noise
yes motor is pretty new. I can spin the tires while up in the air without the motor and the noise is there I do know about the motor bearing though its gotten me before..
Bought a new ring gear so all are new now. Noise is better but still too loud in my opinion. |
