Regen is using the motor to do the braking for you. It not only does the braking but it's putting voltage back into your batteries much like a generator. So to answer your question, you can raise the amount of regen braking to a point that your a$$ will no longer be in the seat. Wear a seat belt and increase it small amounts at a time. You don't want so much braking (generating electricity) that it increases the battery voltage and shuts your lithium battery down.

Regen braking will decrease braking distance and wear on the brake shoes and drums which are on the rear axle only.

Ok so then no fears of putting too much power back into the battery or something? Am I dreaming that there was caution about regen and lithium batteries? If BMS will step in, I'd be happy to play with the tuning.

Thanks for the dialog guys!

Not that I'm aware of. I keep my settings for regen around 100 on the Alltrax scale.
But you should wait for one of the lithium experts who frequent these pages to answer that question directly.

Only times regen will be an issue is if you start off with a fully charged battery then go down a long/steep hill. Regen then may put more charge into the battery than it can take and the BMS will intervene and shut down. Regen will then cease. The second time is if regen is turned up so high that the regen current exceeds the charge current limit of the BMS. Once again, the BMS will intervene and shut the battery down.

Other than these specific cases, regen will never be able to put enough charge back into a lithium battery to be able to shut it down. Regen and lithium work very well together.

I use Regen on both of my Lithium carts - no long hills and I don't charge to 100%. It saves a lot on brakes and gives you more range when you are stopping a lot (to hit the next golf shot!)

I'm just across the Howard Franklin bridge from you. I have regen on my cart. I've varied it from as high as 100 amps to as low as 70 when I was trying to figure out what I wanted. I have it currently set to 90 amps of max regen battery and 90 amps of max regen armature amps. I like the way that feels in my cart. I rarely use the brakes now!

My lithium battery BMS doesn't connect to the motor though. My motor is directly connected to the battery so I don't have to worry about over-amping the BMS.

If you're worried about the BMS then you can still have regen just at a lower amp max.

Hello there! Does your cart come to a stop like a EV one pedal car? OR does it coast out to a stop.
