Default Best Clutch for 18hp Briggs

Making a parts list when the Briggs 18hp engine is ready to install

Is the Comet 780 the best current clutch for an 18hp cart?

Why are some Comet 780 clutches $139 and others are $259

The cheap ones are China clones, not genuine Comet. Buy from a legit seller, like CPP, Vegas Carts, or another one of our sponsors. They will sell the genuine Comet clutch. I would never buy a cheap ebay or amazon clutch. The clutch is the heart of your cart, it delivers the power, the parts need to me correct and reliable. I've seen cheap clutches made with pot metal come apart and spew pieces like grenade shrapnel. Spend the money on the good stuff and never worry.

Is it easier to install the clutch with the engine removed or does it not matter?

If you are talking about the primary it is a lot easier to do it before installing the engine it BUT at times I have done it while the engine is in the cart. Just a little less space to work with. When I was experimenting with the weights and spring set up on my 780 I did it with the engine in the cart for a true A-B test. With the yamaha G 14 the space between the clutch and gas tank is somewhat limited. With taking the gas tank out there would be plenty of space BUT another job I would rather avoid.
