Pretty common issue with the Kawasaki in the club cars too. All you can really do is check the connections, grounds, and brushes. If that’s all good usually replacing the starter fixes it but not always. Seems like they have a hard time overcoming the compression stroke. If you were going to keep it I’d probably try a larger pulley on the primary clutch, but not sure what’s available for ezgo. Club cars have 3 or 4 different options for those pulleys.

You are right. Its trying to overcome the compression when it won't start. ACR would be the fix but ezgo didn't do it.

I have never heard of a larger pulley for these but I don't deal much with these carts . Like you and the MCI lol

Thank you for the responses, it really helps. Might be why it is easier to start in neutral than in gear, guess if I cant trace a bad connection I'll just hand turn through the compression stroke if it won't start. Typically I never want summer to end but ready to bring the cart home and make that 670 swap!

Starting woes have gotten worse. Cart died on me this weekend, push the pedal and nothing happens. Before it acted like a weak battery but now it is nothing at all. Pulled the starter and was going to replace the brushes but they were still in good shape just stuck open and not riding on the armature so I cleaned it up and got the brushes moving freely. It started right up a few times in neutral so I thought it was good, until I went to move it. Had it in reverse, pushed the pedal and the cart started to move then weak condition and now have nothing when pressing the pedal. In you all mentioned replacing the switch but that did not help so should I not waste my time in doing that? I have tried spinning the engine by hand to get into different point on the stroke but still get nothing when I push the pedal, it is dead. If I have to replace the starter/generator then I'll just bring it home and get the 670 in it but I am trying to stretch the 400 as long as possible because of some things going on that prevent me from doing the engine swap and refurb I want.

The early RXV had issues with the hitachi starter and they had a kit with a smaller pulley. AMD starter normally didn’t have this issue. May want to try running a jumper cable from the starter housing to the battery negative and see if that helps.

So by that do you mean putting power directly to the starter? I did bench test it after I cleaned it up and got the brushes moving freely and it worked great, should I do it again with it on the cart? Confirms starter is good so something wrong between the pedal and the starter.

Can you confirm if you hear the solenoid clicking when the starter does not spin. This will help pinpoint the problem area.
