Default Broken Axle

Ok, here is the deal
I was looking for a cheap golf cart for my girlfriend to drive to work (we live 1/4mi from her job). I found a cart (1990 36v Marathon) and charger selling for $1k (listed as is with bad batteries). When I arrived to look at it, the owner attempted to move it and the driver side axle snapped off!! I am not scared of a mechanical challenge, so we agreed on a price of $200 and he kept the batteries. The cart was lifted with a home made block set up and has off road tires. The axle snapped off at the hub with nothing sticking out the tube.... Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get the broken axle out??
Thanks in advance!
Richard

Take the axle out on the other side. Go through with a long steel rod and drive it out from the other side. ( after removing retainer from broken side ) The center of the ring gear carrier is open all the way through. A length of galvanized pipe might work. ( smaller than the axle )

Thank you! I will give that a try!

A wood dowel or a broomstick ought to work, as long as its smaller than the axle. Once you get the retainer off the broken end shouldn't take much to bump it out.

UPDATE ! After some research I find that some of those have spider gears and a center pin. You might need to drop the pan and take a look at yours first. Might not have access from driver side of axle.

Yes, I was just getting ready to send a reply when I saw this. Mine indeed does have spider gears.

I do not have a welder. And apparently a previous owner welded the axle back together (supposedly it was his father in-laws cart before he passed)

If all else fails, you can still remove the center pin and go all the way through. More trouble, but will work. There should be one lock bolt holding that pin in the carrier housing. With that bolt removed the steel pin will slide out. That steel pin is what the 4 spider gears are riding on and also what is blocking the pathway through.
