Front Tires/Back Tires spacing
Hi everyone - just got my first cart. 2007 Drive (G29/YDRE) and was concerned about the tires. The back tires center to center are 38 1/2 inches apart and the front tires center to center are only 34 1/2 inches apart. I guess if the toe-in is set right this isn't an issue but wanted to make sure this sounded normal. Also - in my pictures I don't have the front wheels straight but when I do drive the cart in a straight line the steering wheel isn't centered. I have the service manual for this cart but wasn't sure how to adjust the steering wheel so that when the cart is driving straight the wheel is centered. Thanks for any help/advice you can provide.

If you are staying stock I wouldn't worry about it. If you build it up it may matter more. Generally a wider track in the front will induce oversteer, wider track in the rear will induce understeer. A serious design consideration in race cars, not so much in golf carts. To align lock the wheel straight and adjust tie rod ends to straight. Otherwise the alignment may be good but the wheel won't be centered.

Re: Front Tires/Back Tires spacing
Thanks Colby - Man I'm glad I asked because I thought I could just adjust the steering rod (or steering shaft) inside the upper/lower U-joints. So when I adjust the Tie Rods can I just leave the front end jacked up and loosen/tighten the tie rod or do I actually have to take the tie rod ends off?
Thanks! |

Re: Front Tires/Back Tires spacing
OK...I got it. I had four threads showing between the tie rod and the lock nut, I made both sides only have two threads showing and now when I drive in a straight line the wheel is centered.
Thanks again! |

Re: Front Tires/Back Tires spacing
Nope - not right. The steering wheel is centered now when I drive in a straight line but the cart handles terrible, it feels like the wheels are real loose. I adjusted the tie rods again so I had 4 or 5 threads showing on each end (less toe-in) and the cart is much more stable now. I'll check the toe-in and make sure its within spec but any ideas? I'm thinking I just need to pop the steering wheel off and center that way. I don't see how that would cause my cart to go out of alignment as Colby stated above?
Thoughts? |

Re: Front Tires/Back Tires spacing
How bad is the steering wheel off. The reason I ask is the come from the factory a little to the left so golfer who are right handed can wright their score down on the score card. If you want the steering wheel centered get the front tires alined. The best way that I have found is to turn the steering wheel untill the drivers side wheel is straight with the side of the cart then adjust the passager side tire untill it is straight with the side of the cart. This will get you close to where it is suppose to be. Then take you steering wheel off and center it. Now I know this isn't the correct way to aline the front end but it works.

Re: Front Tires/Back Tires spacing
How much threads are showing on the tie rod ends does not matter...you have to measure the tires in order to get it correct. Use a tape measure and measure across the front of the front tires mid way up. Then measure across the back of the front tires mid way up and the back should measure about 1/8- 1/2" more then the front. Adjust one side of the tie rod end to achieve that and you will be in good shape. If you want the steering wheel perfect you may have to loosen the splined end on the steering shaft with the wheels straight and then possibly take off the steering wheel and move that also to get it.

Re: Front Tires/Back Tires spacing
The steering wheel is at about 11 o'clock when the cart is going straight so its not off too much. An earlier post even said this is normal so maybe its right?
Appreciate all the feedback guys, cool board. |

Re: Front Tires/Back Tires spacing
So my passenger side tire points out (toe) considerably when the drivers side tire is straight. Just bought it and am going to take a shot at cranking on the right tie rod. I am curious what the spec is for the tire spacing front vs. Rear? I saw 1/8"-1/4" spec on the front toe in. Thoughts?
