Default 2008 lifted EZGO RXV brakes locked up - electric brake model

I am posting this to pay it forward and help other people with similar issues, I already troubleshot and fixed the cart. I know not all brake issues will be the same but here is what happened to me, I hope this helps you:

1. Driving down the road cart slowed down abruptly and locked up. Since the brake is electric it will NOT release, tow switch does not work. I had to unbolt and remove the whole brake assembly on the side of the road and push the cart home with no brakes...... Yes.

2. Brake module smelled like a burnt hair. Did some youtube surfing and determined I had a burnt bad brake coil assembly. Looked for one on EBAY, found a heavy duty brake assembly for lifted carts- ordered.

3. Once it arrived, I looked up the installation procedure on youtube, installed it and the cart had the same issue... it still does not work. Exact same issue as before!!!!!

4. I turn on the cart and the solenoid does a double click and brake lights stay on all the time??? I looked at voltage at the coil wire connection with brake coil connected, switch in tow and key switch in Neutral- 0v. Checked plug that is under the cup holders- OK. I took the new brake coil off and connected it directly to 48v and it worked fine, checked resistance also and it was perfect (27 ohms) I decided to take a really good look at the main solenoid that is doing the double click deal, found a melted large terminal, the solenoid causing the fault and not releasing the brake!!!

5. I removed the solenoid and one of the bolt terminals was melted and not pointing straight up. I put good solenoid in and BOOM! Issue fixed, brake lights back to normal and cart works great. The solenoid might have been the issue since the beginning, or maybe the old brake coil affected the solenoid and melted it?? I dont really know, all I know is that it is fixed. :mrgr een:

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck with that HD brake, they typically run normally for about 3 weeks here. Never run the ezgo HD brake if you can avoid it, It just doesn't work right for long with a Danaher controller.

You will be right back where you started, or even possibly worse.

Some people here..... Say never run the ezgo HD brake, on any of one of the rxv (I can't help it, comes installed on every new cart right off the big truck). Worse is any aftermarket brake. I'm in a spot leaving me in "I don't know what to say". The ezgo HD brake has been better, but I know for sure it has no place on a older cart with Danaher controller (it fails in about 3 weeks there, brake ok, but controller not happy). Customer complaint level far from acceptable. (And complaints that I can usually replicate, not "false positives") , but that adds tons of fun to my day. Well, some days you just can't win. That's when I go pick another project, and say "manyana" to that one until...... (That's the local spanish word for "another day", often confused with "tomorrow"). I sure love/want the next "tricky job", but sometimes you just end up throwing up the voltmeter/wrench & saying "I'll be getting back to this one". Anyone who doesn't run into this, isn't doing hard enough projects!

I hear ya! thanks for the feedback. This cart has the Curtis controller, I hear it is a bit more forgiving with aftermarket brakes than the Danaher.
