Default Harley Rear Shock Question

Just received the new rear shock for my 73-D and it has a bell on the top. Upon first install attempt it appears that the bell hits the frame under the top shock mount and the hole does not line up. Has anyone used one of the replacement shocks from Golf Cart Care or Vintage Golf Carts? Do they fit? Should I be installing the shock upside down?

Looks like they changed the replacement shock to a different after market type. I purchased one about 6 months ago and it did not have the "bell" on top. The one I received was black and exactly like the original stock one. I would call Vintage and talk to the parts clerk. If they are selling these for this application maybe they have a solution.

I bought it from Golf Cart Care and have already contacted him. His answer was weak springs or mount it upside down. Well even if the springs are weak I do not see how it will change the position of frame and top bolt hole. Stronger springs will just raise the frame and mount. As for installing the shock upside down I always assumed that changed the way the shock functioned..

I have emailed Carlos at Vintage to ask about their shock, the picture on the website shows the same style shock.

I will more than likely just end up grinding a flat spot on the back of the bell to clearance it..

I just installed the same shock this weekend and thought I would have the same issue. Mine just barley clears the top cross bar after getting everything mounted and tight. Make sure your shock has the metal spacer inside the rubber boot. Mine didn't come with it and I had to take those pieces from an old shock. The new shock made a big difference in the ride as well. Good luck.

I used a shock from Napa that worked fine. Cheap too. I'll check if I have the part # if anyone is interested.

After much research I decided to use a KYB 343030 excel -g shock. It bolts right in the stock mount and is less $20 from rockauto.1 part listing is a 1962 volvo 122s station wagon rear shock. It's 11.14"-17.44" came the closest to the original 10.5"-17" length and stroke wise. Also the 2 E1 mounts were spot on.

I just bought that Napa shock and it has a full strut cover that didn't fit into the upper mounting hole without bending in the cross frame inward and hammering the cover to somewhat flatten it at the top so it would fit into the mount hole. It had a list price of $24.99.
