72 Model D keeps shredding Drive belt
Guys, I have not been able to figure this out and it is driving me crazy. After replacing just about everything (filters, plug, fuel lines with upgraded electric fuel pump, etc.) I figured that I may as well replace the drive belt too. After putting the replacement one on, I began to notice little by little that the belt was fraying from the edge closest to the engine side of the pulley. It started off in small bits and I just attributed it to a "breaking in" of sorts. Then, the longer it would get used, the more wear that I would observe (always seeming to originate from that same side closest to the engine. Yesterday while my son was riding, it (the belt) did a 180 while on the cart. Yes, I mean it completely spun around while driving to the "flat side" down toward the bottom of the pulley and the grooved side was now visible at the top of the pulley. Unbelievably, the cart still operated like that until I just happened to open it up (checking on my previous work). I went ahead and used a pry bar to get enough clearance to flip the belt to its correct position. After this, the cart ran for about an hour until total belt failure. I then noticed that the inside of the pulley seemed like it wasn't smooth and had some sharp edges on it. I thought to myself "this must be the reason for the fraying of the belt". I then filed the pulley down until it was smooth and put the original 1972 belt back on until a replacement could arrive.
Fast forward to today. While my son was operating the cart, at first, just the top encasing material of the belt came apart (the entire length of the belt in one complete manner). Then, an hour or so later, total belt destruction once again. I have attached a few photos. Please let me know if anyone has any idea what I need to do to resolve this. It is driving me crazy. I have a really good running cart , but the belt system is totally unreliable at this point. Thanks for any help with this. David |

Re: 72 Model D keeps shredding Drive belt
On the primary drive, the belt should rise when the clutch closes on it as RPMs increase, and the secondary drive the belt should drop down into the flanges as RPMs increase. If the two drive are not aligned it can cause that type of fraying and ware you described. Check the attachment and check the two flange alignments. It could be your problem. Also, that belt that broke a part could have lodged pieces in the secondary drive spring, you may want to check that as well. link attached for aliening drives, and also the manuals for your cart. Goo luck.

Re: 72 Model D keeps shredding Drive belt
Thanks for the info. I am about at my ability limit with this thing. I took it to a repair shop and hopefully, they can figure it out. One other thing that i noticed when it took it iff if the trailer. A few days ago I did the "wet clutch" top off and I had quite a time getting the plug back in. I never noticed anything leaking after I got it back together but as I took it off of the trailer this evening, they had a puddle of 90 wt looking oil on the trailer. I guess I will have to address that as well. Just very strange that it just now started leaking.

Those clutches look like they are in great shape.
Not trying to be a wise guy but are you sure you are using the right belt? I chewed two up on my 80 before I realized the belts I was using were too short. No idea how I screwed that up but it was a learning experience. |

Re: 72 Model D keeps shredding Drive belt
Lochlin has a point, you should be sure of your belt size, even though both your drives clutches look good, and they both do, they can still be out of alignment though. I just had a belt blow right off the drive flanges, about a month ago. I thought for sure it was due the alignment issues between the two drives. Ended up being a really old belt, but the stabilizer bar was quite loose. Caused a bit of forward and reverse movement on the motor. That could contribute belt ware, as well as bad motor mounts. Just another thought. Good luck.

Re: 72 Model D keeps shredding Drive belt
Thanks for the input guys.
The belt that I shredded was a direct replacement for the factory belt ( which I put on afterwards and shredded as well). See below link for e bay replacement ordered belt. http://www.ebay.com/itm/271609764334...S:1120&vxp=mtr I hope the mechanic can figure it out. I printed excerpts of the allignment process out and gave it to him as well. Getting back to the 90 wt. oil on the trailer, any thoughts (other than the drain plug leaking) on how this could have leaked out ? Thanks again, David |

Re: 72 Model D keeps shredding Drive belt
Its best to know for sure on that belt,it should be 1 3/16" wide x 36 1/2" O.D.any thing smaller will cause that belt to ware quickly, as lochlin stated. yscloskey, concider going to vintagegolfcartparts.com and ordering a primary drive seal kit, part # 36369-77. That should resolve the leaking drive cup, be sure to inspect the drive cup and the edges of it, noting that it isn't bend, or dented on the edge. Your Primary drive does look very clean.

Re: 72 Model D keeps shredding Drive belt
fairly easy to install the seal kit, you can do it while the motor is mounted in the cart. As i said inspect that drives up for damage, hopefully you won't find a issue with the drive cup , just worn seals. Good Luck

Re: 72 Model D keeps shredding Drive belt
One thing I noticed in the picture is it looks like one of the retaining clips is missing from the driven clutch. That cap that holds the spring in should not be at an angle like that. Its basically a narrow washer split into two halves. I don't think that is causing your problem directly but maybe that is a sign that someone had it apart that didn't know what they were doing so maybe something else is wrong or not in good shape in there.
