Newbe attempting hei conversion on 78 ezgo
I have 78 ezgo 2 stroke I've been told the ignitor is bad in. I bought this cart not running and am trying to get it going. I've looked at the wiring diagram pages, but I'm having trouble finding the correct on for my cart show how to wire up the hei. I tried following the universal one on here, but didn't get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks, Tanner

If you have a 78 then you do not have an ignitor to replace. Can you post the manufacturers code or maybe some photographs?

Re: Newbe attempting hei conversion on 78 ezgo
maybe i used the wrong term. i looked at my notes and they told me it was the ignition module/ voltage regulator. i'm not sure if this is the correct diagnosis though.
serial code is 780214 I47536. is this the code you asked for? i'm trying to upload a pic now. |

Unfortunately the starter relay, regulator and most of the generator parts are no longer available so your best hope will be to find a donor cart in the range 1976 - 79.

Are you saying those 3 parts is what's wrong with it? Or just things that cant be replaced if they go bad?

I am saying that if those parts go bad there are no new parts available. You may be able to find used but a pre 1980 EZGO is going to be difficult to maintain.

Re: Newbe attempting hei conversion on 78 ezgo
I hate to be a prophet of doom but the major issue with these very early 2PG engines is that the crankshaft is no longer available either. This means that you could spend time and money reboring the cylinder and fitting an oversize piston only to have the big end fail and then you are in a world of pain. An ideal solution would be to find a post 82 ( but pre 89) engine which would drop straight in. It's all rather a shame as that is quite a pretty cart you have there.
