Default Still backfiring. I simply cannot get this right!!!

Sorry to all who have seen my repeated posts on this matter. I cannot get this thing to stop backfiring. About to give up.... 81 2pg. Have to play with the choke while cold starting. Backfires EVERY single time when starting cold. S/G begins turning engine over, engine backfires once, then it starts up. Ive been lucky up til now that I haven't blown a seal yet. Once warmed up, it rarely backfires, if ever. It doesn't tend to back fire at all while pressing/depressing gas pedal while driving (as some carts do).

Here's what I know, and what I've done....

Removed carb, cleaned endlessly.
Removed bowl, checked float. Sitting level.
Removed reed valves, checked for debris.
Installed new exhaust gaskets. No change.
Adjusted "click pen" spring on carb a hundred different ways.
Adjusted microswitch a bit. No change
Checked spark plug. Gapped at 30.
Changed fuel filters
Cleaned air filter
Compression at 150...

When I first rebuilt the 244, I RARELY, if ever, had to use the choke when starting. After the first winter, it became harder and harder to start without using the choke. Runs great now, but have to use choke every time when cold starting (even in 90 degree weather) and backfires almost every time.

It seems like its getting loaded up with fuel, backfires, then runs fine. Ive been able to feather the gas pedal while manipulating the choke and got it to start without backfiring a few times. But it is not easy.

ANY ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

This might be a stupid question, but do you have the piston in with the port to the carburetor? And is your fuel pump diaphragm cracked and letting too much fuel in? Just strictly WAGs

Yes, piston is in correctly. Cart has been running great the last two years. I haven't checked the diaphragm but I am assuming if it was cracked it would not run as smoothly as it does. After it backfires then warms up it runs like a champ.

Seems like it isn't atomizing the fuel enough on the initial start up, thus pushing raw gas into the exhaust, and backfiring when it finally starts.

Try this. Take off the seat, and hold the throttle lever closed while you step on the pedal. Let it turn over several times before you let it open.

I'm curious if it's pulling gas in through a ripped lower diaphragm. It could be a pin hole that takes all night for the gas to drain into the crankcase.

Another option would be that it isn't getting enough spark until it spins over for a while, and is pumping fuel into the exhaust.

I see. If it isn't getting enough spark, what is the suggested remedy? Change gap?

Are you using an NGK plug? I keep hearing that these carts like them the best.

There is always the HEI mod, but I would explore other options first. Check that pump real good.

Yes, using the ngk plug. That is all I've used since the rebuild. Also did the HEI mod during rebuild as well. Haven't looked into the fuel pump yet, but will by mid-week.
