The shims go under your stock valve springs (rough side down), new retainers go on top, new split-locks hold them in. Search YouTube for "valve spring rope trick" if you haven't done this before.

The advance key goes in the slot where the crank indexes to the flywheel. It should shift the flywheel in the clockwise direction if you are facing the flywheel.

The two steel rocker shafts replace the aluminum ones. You'll have four steel shafts instead of two steel for exhaust and two aluminum for intake.

Hope that helps!

Yes, remove flywheel, remove existing key, install offset key, and re-install flywheel.

Some people like to clean up the crank and flywheel while it's off, and lap the flywheel to the crank, clean it up again, then install key and flywheel.

Other people do it quickly and then complain when the new key breaks

They don't lap it to clean it. It is lapped in for a precise fit. That way the flywheel is really fit to the crank. The key is more for positioning. The fit holds the flywheel in place so the key is not sheared. Some have learned the hard way about not lapping the flywheel particularly with the advance key.

The rev kit is for use with the factory valve springs. If you are using the high performance valve springs, no need for the rev kit shims, just use the pushrods.

Have the 23hp vanguard model 386447 and has no key switch wired to it so need a diagram, searched some on the forum but all were older threads. BTW is the stock Briggs vanguard key switch a good choice
