88 ezgo help carburator linkage
I am first time golf cart owner. Bought a 88 ezgo. Runs really rough. I am a old time snowmobiler and clutches look to be working ok. Took the carburator all apart and cleaned it but still not running right. I am unsure of how the cables work for the carburator. The choke understand no problem and can adjust that. Then the throttle cable is a mystery to me. When you push the gas pedal it moves in the oposite direction that i thought it should? Also has another cable that goes down to the wheels? I am really confused as to how they should be hooked up and would love to see some pictures if i could? I dont think the guy that had it before me new what he was doing and tryed to fix it and does not have cables set right. If i could get a better understanding of how this works and some pictures then could move on to posible other problems?

I have an 88 also I will try to take a picture for you tonight and post it. The cable running down by the wheel attaches to the lever that sticks out in front of the driven clutch on the rear end. That is your govenor, when the clutch pushes forward it will push on that lever pulling the cable which pulls the throttle closed some so you don't over-rev the engine. Thanks i will look forward to viewing how it should be properly conected. Does any one know where to get a carb rebuild kit? I cleaned it really good but not sure about the needle and seat.

Ok i think i understand how this works? Foot off gas pedal, You need to set the throtle with the set screw stopper thing to closed position. When you press the gas it allows it to open up, Just the opposite of how my brain was looking at it i guess. I followed the other cable down to the clutch and back up, when the belt rides down in the clutch under load it will pull the throttle back closed depending on how far you set it.. Ok i am getting it but??
It is still running like crap. I ordered new carburator today and plug, Could not get a rebuild kit for this carb. I guess 88 was odd ball year. Any other ideas or things to check? I see the belt is sitting low in the secondary clutch but not to bad, I would think this would affect take off and acceleration. |

111 When you say runs like crap what is the cart/ engine doing. The clutch and belt is the heart of all performace. As a snowmobiler I am suprised at how some clutchs are ignored and neglected. the belt riding low could be wear, belt narrow, clutch bushings binding, spring broken or tired. When the belt is down in the pulleys you are in second, third gear or what ever. I think that a lot of carters could learn a lot by surfing snowmobile sites, some of it gets real techie but we hunt for that perfect ramp, spring, weight combo for the quickest setup we can get. man you are so right!! I used to race snowmobiles in pro stock class so had to learn a lot about clutching to be competive! Yes we could ride the fine line with speking the motor out but chassie a clutching was where you won it! When i first looked at my cart clutch setup the gears in my head were turning with ramp degrees, springs, weights, shims and on and on. I will use my cart for manly work around the farm, pulling small trailer and maybe lawn sweeper ect. My first thought was to stiffen up the secondary spring and check ramp angle on helix for more low speed rpm and power for pulling. I know you are on the same page as you understand this stuff. I dont see hardly any talk on these sites regaurding clutching???
About your question, yes the belt is sitting low but i did take it off completly and it still ran crappy, just takes a long time to get any rpms, nothing on the bottom end. I will check compression tomorrow and get ready for new carb and plug to arrive. I cant wait to get into these clutches once i get the motor running right! Maybe do some weight nothing for hole shot and a little shimming:) HEY MAN. I used to spend hours grinding my own weights. Lets talk clutching. Not alot of people understand clutches and how they work. When i raced pro stock 700 class in the mid and early 90s we tested, tested and tested. When grass dragging 660 ft we added more weight to the primary clutch, as much as it could handle with the stiffer primary spring and still keeping at the optimal rpm range which was 8300 arcording to are dyno runs. Then we ran a softer spring in the secondary with average helex angle (cant remember exactly) and let the primary do the work. We could fine tune the secondary if we were off rpms for that day by adjusting spring tension to get at 8300. When we did speed runs 1000ft we would through all this information away and start over. I wont get to far into detail but amazing how differt the setup were for what you wanted to acomplish.. |
