Question 1993 Gas Par Car solenoid "smoking"

I recently cleaned my par car (1993 Gas) and when I went to reinstall the battery, some smoke started coming from the side of the solenoid where the red cable enters, so I quickly stopped. Any help would be great.

Direct short? Are you sure you were hooking it up corectly? Solenoid could be toast. Post a pic it helps.

Got it working. I think the solenoid is toast - only working intermittently now. I think it got wet when we cleaned it. Only disconnected the battery during the cleaning, so the wiring should be normal. Do you know if the solenoid is something special or will an automotive one work?

The started generator pulls about 200 amps.
