Ok--I removed the starter/gen and cleaned out the black dust and replaced the bushes AND bought a new battery. When I got everything back together and started it up and revved up the engine I noticed that there was battery acid coming out of the overflow vent (it is a maintenance free battery). So I got out my volt meter to check the charging voltage--it was close to 18 volts. I assume that 18 volts is too high and I need a new regulator?????

Thoughts please!

Default Starter problem?

Yes too high. Should be around 14.5 if I recall.

Check the grounds of the voltage regulator. I chased that problem around and around. I replaced three regulators. Turned out the ground for the regulator itself was not grounded good enough. I solved it by grounding the regulator directly to the battery.

Thanks for your reply--I'll have to check out the ground!

Mine does exactly the same thing. I’m thinking battery because after I charge it, it seems to work ‘better’ for a day or two but eventually goes back to delay. Mine has been this way for years. Battery is not that old.

Just checked battery voltage. 12.5 then down to 9.4 when engaging the starter.

I removed the starter and cleaned out the dust-also replaced the brushes--replaced the battery (which tested bad at Walmart) and replaced the voltage regulator because the new battery was being charged with 18+ volts. (now it is charging at 14+)

The cart is working great now and even seems like it has more power!

Thanks for everyone's replies.
