1986 club car still hard to start
My old club car runs great once it starts. However, getting it to "engage ( move)" is becoming more difficult. I have had this cart for a few years and it all comes down to the same issue. I have to pump the gas pedal more and more to get it to move. This cart has an electric fuel pump so no choke to deal with. Carb, spark plug, generator brushes, all replaced. The cart ran fine for a couple of months. Flipped the switch, gave it some gas, and away we went. little by little I found myself needing to pump the gas pedal more and more in order to get it to move. The issue appears to be fuel related yet the pedal and linkage seem to be working correctly. It could be a coincidence but jiggling the fwd reverse lever in gear while pumping the pedal appears to help...yet micro switches check out fine.
so now I'm wondering if the fwd/ reverse cable itself could affect the cart to engage? Before I go back to square one .. just want to make sure I'm not missing something. |

FYI, just because it has an electric fuel pump does not mean it may not need to be choked occasionally.

Sorry, but I'm having a hard time trying to understand what you are trying to say.
Are you saying that the engine won't rev up as you give it more gas, or are you saying it won't "engage (move)" meaning that it revs up but the clutch or drive belt is not engaging so the cart won't move forward? Those are two entirely separate things and have different solutions. And what do you mean by "once it starts"? Are you using the choke when starting it as you should? |

Re: 1986 club car still hard to start
If you're hitting the pedal and the cart seems like it's not not doing anything (not engaging) and you have to hit the pedal a few times for the starter/generator to respond, the problem is likely within the starter/generator. Next time you try to start it, watch the s/g pulley, you'll likely see it "jump" just a hair and then do nothing.
You can remove it, check the brushes, and blow the carbon out of it. Mine was having an issue not engaging about a month ago, and just removing the brushes and cleaning them, and blowing all the black carbon dust out of the inside of the starter/generator with compressed air made a huge difference on my '87...and I spent zero dollars. Oh, and I also cleaned up all my wire connections with a wire wheel attachment on my Dremel. This isn't to say that mine starts perfect now, every so often the armature stops on a flat spot and takes a couple pedal smacks to jump the rotation over in order to get up and running...but that issue will only be 100% corrected with a brand-new starter/generator. Here's a video on checking the brushes that helped me when I took mine apart. My brushes were in good shape so I just cleaned them and blew the case out with an air gun. It's actually not that hard to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87alxNyKPlo |

And here's my thread last month where I was having possibly the same issue you're having now:

Re: 1986 club car still hard to start
Thank you all !! I did replace the brushes and clean out the starter generator a year or more ago. It never dawned on me to recheck? and in hindsight, these were issues I dealt with in the beginning. It's hard to describe with words the issue I am having. Is it possible to post a short video on this site?? It would be so much easier to get help diagnosing if you could see and hear.
Someone mentioned an electric fuel pump may still need to be choked? Hmmm.. the entire choke system has been dismantled. The casing/ hose that attaches to the side of the air filter is long gone. This cart has been running for years with nothing restricting airflow into the filter. I tried using a screen, even cheesecloth over the open port leading to the air filter but that seemed to make it more difficult to start. Could all my starting problems be a direct result of unrestricted air leading to the air filter??? |
