Can I run 72 volts on a 36 volt VGlide Resistor Cart??
I know it sounds crazy but since I may be able to get some 12 volt batteries for nothing, I was giving thought to trying them out. I was planning on upgrading to 48 volts soon anyway. I cannot see any parts that are very voltage sensitive. I have a 93 CC with VGlide and coil resistors. The VGlide is nothing more than a brush running across a bunch of contacts. The resistors are just coils of metal. Basicly the whole cart seems to be pretty high tech for the year 1920 (all these "parts" existed back then). There are no diodes, no PC boards, etc. I have electronic experience, so yes, I do know that higher voltage = more amperage = more heat, etc. I have already figured that going up to 48 volts would be no problem and all I was planning on doing was adding a voltage drop resistor in line with the solenoid coil for a 48 volt conversion. Maybe I can just use 5 batteries for 60 volts? I could even combine three 6 volts and three 12 volts for 54 volts but I think unbalanced batteries in line with each other would simply cause early battery failure to say the least. I just hate to pass up some free 12 volts. I know that running up hill or over grass all day would burn things up as well. I am just planning on doing some neighborhood street running and wondering if someone has tried this and if so, what happened?

Nope, not recommended. Unless you like buying resistors. You'll burn the resistors up. You can try it if you want though. Let us know how it happens.......
P.S. Get pictures. Last edited by roady89; 11-06-2010 at 12:17 AM.. Reason: added picture request. |

Maybe bigger resistors. use #2 for #1 spot, #3 for #2 spot, etc. Then make one for the biggest one?

That what they do on the 48 volt conversions.....

The V-glide will melt at 48v. I can only imagine it will happen faster at 60v.....

Re: Can I run 72 volts on a 36 volt VGlide Resistor Cart??
I thought I read of someone who added two more 6 volts to theier cart and was running OK with it.
I may be able to get a 48 volt Melex really cheap. Maybe I can take the Curtis controller and related parts out of that. I need a roof anyway and it has one. What do you think? |

Re: Can I run 72 volts on a 36 volt VGlide Resistor Cart??
Stock controllers are light weight 275 amp units that for the most part will not hold up or provide enough amperage for what we all want to do
P.S. There are 2 throttle positions where you can run as much amperage as you like thru a resistor cart .. they are wide open throttle (wot) and off. In these positions amperage is not flowing thru the resistors... I have driven them this way ~ (full throttle / coast / full throttle / coast...) it is fun until somebody else (wife, kids, friends) unknowingly melts your drive system down. |
