more speed and torque
I have a 2012 48v Precedent, stock motor and controller. It is set to speed code 4. I would like a little more speed and more torque for uphill runs as I frequently have passengers. How can I go about this for a reasonable cost? Any suggestions are helpful.

Re: more speed and torque
If your looking to increase torque as well as speed you have to start with the delivery system, that being the controller, relay and cabling. No matter if you go with an Altrax or Curtis you need to replace the 250 amp controller with the likes of a 500 amp controller. Plus depending on how much your willing to speed you should also plan on replacing the motor too... It all depends on how much money your willing to spend....

Re: more speed and torque
So, I can JUST replace the controller? What will happen to motor life? I'm sure the batteries will run down quicker. Do you suggest one the "on the fly"types?

Re: more speed and torque
How big are your hills, and how fast do you wanna go up them? Does your cart have a lift kit? Bigger than stock tires? If not now, are either of those planned for future upgrades?
With an Alltrax XCT 400 you can convince a little more speed and quite a bit more torque out of the stock motor. A 500 amp controller would work just as well to power the stock motor, but you will have to limit it to about 400 amps to avoid cooking it. If you decide to upgrade to a high torque motor, you'll need the extra power that the 500 can deliver. |

Bought a refurb club car with SC4 installed and 3 year old batteries. Had trouble with the smallest hills. Replaced batteries and could now least ride around most of our hilly HOA but there were several hilly road that I could not do. Replaced cables with 2 gauge and found no joy. Replaced the motor with an HP one and still no joy. Replaced the controller and solenoid with 500 amp and there I found joy with no paved hill being out of my reach within the HOA... In fact I'm the only person in the HOA to have an electric cart that can venture the entire subdivision, most dont leave their circle or switch to gas... |

Re: more speed and torque
I have an Alltrax XCT 500 and 400 amp Solenoid from ScottyB in my 2010 Precedent with the stock ADC Motor.
The increase in torque and top speed is very noticeable (I have it limited to 26mph), but the Motor HP increase which is what You need to go fast up hill is only marginal in my opinion. I will probably upgrade my Motor once I can decide if the torque or speed motor will give me the boost at the correct rpm, and then I just have to set the XCT to max and I am ready to go. |
