Aftermarket coil-over spring upgrade question

Is this a good upgrade in springs for a G16 that I am adding a flip seat to? I am looking to simply replace the existing coil overs with heavier springs.

Seems too cheap to be true... I know I can get others for $100, but isn't this the same thing? Thanks!!

I am going to be building my own flip seat. I will take pics and measurements as I go and start a new post for it if there is any interest. I have to admit it will be a LOT like Mike Mac's.... Credit where credit is due.

I know!! I have found it is easier to do some homework and save some cash sometimes.

I haven't taken my original shocks off yet, but once I do I'll be able to tell if this will work or not. Things I will be looking at is the required ID of the springs to go over and not bind on the shock and the diameter of the spring steel bar stock used in making the spring. Larger diameter = stronger spring. Match up up length as close as possible and I should be good to go. Definitely worth trying when budgets are tight.

Still hoping to get some more reponses but I will be able to post back if I don't.

Stuff4mason - I was reading a post where you just got the heavier coilovers from Jakes. Could you do some measuring on the springs? I would love to know the measurements of both the old and the new springs, the shocks themselves don't matter. Thanks!!!

I read a thread where someone put those springs on, used a strap to compress the shock, not a very old thread. Got them from McMasters or similar......

The new springs (jakes) are 7" (compressed) [you asked a little too late for non-compressed!!] and 2 1/2" wide. All springs are open.

The old stock springs for the G8 are 8" long (non-compressed, but worn out) and 2 3/4" wide with all springs closed except the last three.

Not that it matters, but the shocks themselves are exactly the same length.

I can tell you the new springs added 1" of height to the rear of the cart.

Thanks guys! I can tell you now that I will be performing this upgrade as soon as possible. I use my cart around the acreage pulling trailers and hauling on the back as well as the occassional jaunt into town with three riders. I know I am maxing out what the originals are designed for and once I get my flip seat/bed put on, I will really need the extra capacity.

I'll keep everyone posted. Seems silly to spend $100 for something that we can get for $35 if they are basically the same without red paint. I've got paint.....

Mike, I can't want to build a seat like yours. That is exactly what I want but haven't sat down to mock it up yet. I will be in the next week or so if the weather settles down a little. Tired of Tornado warnings around here....

When you install the red ones from Jakes they are not compressed. The take off the old springs (I cut mine) and the top retainer just slides off. You install the new springs slide the retainer on and there is about a 3/4" to 1/2" difference and you put on the supplied two piece spacer to make up the difference.
