Default DS Losing Power

I have a 1997 48V DS that I just replaced batteries in. I noticed that the first time I used the cart, going in reverse had very limited power. Also, when the cart sat overnight, it would be very sluggish when I first used it. Power was noticeably different during rides. Any ideas as to this unpredictable power/speed levels?
