Default 1984 HD Golf Cart only "idling"

I recently purchased a 1984 Harley Davidson 3 wheeled golf cart and it ran fine... For about an hour. Then, it started to idle. I know that golf carts aren't supposed to idle. It randomly started to run fine again until about 3 days later it broke down and experienced the same issue. It would move to a crawling pace occasionally. Around this time, the main ribbon ground wire broke so now my wires leading from ignition to I believe it is my starting generator are getting super hot. Does anyone know if the broken main ground wire would be a logical cause for super hot wires. Is there also a fix for the really low rpms?

Attached is a picture of the type of golf cart. There is also a picture of the ground wire. The negative wire from the starter generator going to the ignition switch gets hot. Also the small negative wire going down gets hot too.

Yes, that main ground has to be attached for the cart to run. If it isn't, current will try to flow through less robust wires to make it to ground. They are too small to handle that and overheat as a result. The wire must be replaced first and foremost. It doesn't have to be that exact wire. Any 6 gauge wire or thicker will work.

With regard to your cart idling, I am very confident that it isn't running at all and the it's starter that is actually the only thing running. Starters are able to push these carts around very slowly until such time that the battery wears out.

Get that ground wire replaced and I bet your cart starts running right again.

Thank you. My starter generator has completely gone out I believe. It wont even turn over anymore and my battery is fine. The solenoid does its click too. I don’t I’ll benchmark test it, put on the ground.

This testing procedure might help you narrow down exactly where your fail is.
