Is it dieseling when the ignition is turned off? Possibly too high of idle speed could cause that. Do a voltage check between the wire coming from the ignition switch that connects to the first coil. Measuring from that coil terminal to the frame should show zero volts when the key is off. If it shows 12 volts, there is a problem with the ignition switch. If zero volts and the engine is still running, it is dieseling (continuing to fire because of high head temperature without ignition) and the idle speed is too fast. Reduce the idle speed to just fast enough for the engine to run with the ignition turned on.
Did you solve your fuel tank problem? That relining kit that I told you about is the magic solution for fixing an old tank, and if you can find a new one, much cheaper than a replacement that will fit in the same place. Charley |
