Our Turf Rider IV 4 Wheel - Restoration Project
The Turf Rider IV has arrived to its new home. A 4 wheel version, I can’t wait to get started on it. Purchased sight unseen out of California, it arrived in Michigan a couple of days ago.
And it is rough! My expectations were higher, but I am keeping in mind it’s 50 years old, so… This will be a 2015-2016 project involving my adult sons and to a lesser degree, my 3 grandchildren. While “mechanically inclined,” I am not a mechanic. Our CC Precedent is gas, and that one is easier to figure out. But electric stuff, especially really old electric stuff? I’m a neophyte. The plan at this time is to keep the Turf Rider IV completely stock except wheels and tires. If I can get the original system to operate, it will serve me just fine. Our CC can be the “go faster” cart, and if I had better skills and a welder, I’d consider a gas conversion. But alas, that’s not my situation. My sons and I have done amateur restorations on a few vehicles (always sending them elsewhere for paintwork), but the fiberglass on this cart is really in poor condition. It’s on my trailer and I’ll be covering it with a tarp tomorrow for the long Michigan winter. I promise to pace myself, but I have loads of mechanical questions for those willing to respond. Today I’ll focus on a few battery, charger, and motor questions. First, I believe this thing has an onboard charger. Hoping someone will confirm that’s the thing with the big wiring block on it in a couple of the attached photos. Is there a way to test it? If advised to not rely on the onboard charger, is there a schematic available to show me how to wire everything together to use an external charger? I did purchase a Listronics 36 volt box, but I’ll need to change the EZGO connector. I also placed a photo of the broken timer. If I learn how to test whether it functions, I’d still like to know if it’s better to use a portable charger? I’ve already removed the dry (but nice looking) Trojan batteries. There’s little tiny stickers that may have once had a date code, but I’ll bet they’re a decade old. While likely they’re beyond salvation, I’d be willing to spend a few bucks to make an attempt at getting a bit of juice out of them. Suggestions? The battery box has scaled rust, but I tried to punch holes through it and could not. This beast used a minimum of 1/8 metal for many parts of the underbody, and it’s very heavy. It’s hard to roll, too, but I’ll save that stuff for a future post. The foot pedal actuates a thingee that might be a controller with brass contacts. Again, I’m new to this. As for the motor, how can I test to see whether it works? Is there a way to test the controller? If I can confirm the motor and the controller work, it’ll put my mind at ease before spending $600 on batteries. So, as mentioned, I’ll try to ask questions in a moderate fashion. Then, once the snow disappears and I begin the disassembly process, I’ll document with photos and text everything I do. This is going to be a challenge! |
