Default Charging System

I just purchased a 91 G9 . I dont believe it is charging , or maybe I have too many accesories . I noticed the a Green wire coming from the motor going to a pigtail is half melted ....... I am thinking that might be part of the problem .Also I am running 4 Hella 55watt Offroad light and a Stereo. Is that to much for the charging system ???? If so are there any upgrades ? Thanks

Default Re: Charging System

The only upgrade I know is to put a car alternator on it. IIRC the stock one is 30A but only at high rpm it hardly charges at low engine rpm. Make sure you ground anything you add to the battery as the frame is not grounded stock you will trash something. If you drive during day to charge and have a good battery it should be ok long as you don't run it dead at night. The charging wires come out of the generator small wires and go to the regulator usually on fender well behind battery. Put a voltage meter/gauge on it and you will know what is going on. Should be 12.5v roughly at rest and above is charging and lower is discharging. The voltage reg will cut it down if it gets fully charged and you use no extra power.

I have pair of 55w driving lights and they dim when I slow or stop, easy to tell when its enough rpm that it is charging over 12v they get brighter. I do limited night driving, never had a problem with them running battery down. I am temped to get some LED that I can leave on longer at night for light.

Sho. the stock generator only puts out 15 amps, and that is only at high RPM. 4-55 watts lights is a minimum of 16 amps. Your killing that gen., reg., and battery if you have all 4 lights on at the same time. It is also hard to turn that gen. at 15 amps, so you have less power to drive the car in that situation.
