Need advice buying a golf cart
I am a new forum member and not too familiar with golf carts. I am looking to buy an older, lower priced golf cart for utility use at my home. I have a steep yard that goes from the lake front up to the house, probably a 100 ft run at a 15 degree slope. The majority of its use will be hauling up and down this hill, and I will not use it a great deal.
From what I've read I would be better off with a gas cart than a 36 volt electric one. I believe the 48 volt carts might be ok but cost more. I don't mind doing mechanical work if I found gas cart that needed some work. I also realize that replacing batteries and controllers are big bucks. So, am I on the right track with leaning toward a gas cart? If so, what brands and models would you recommend? Thanks in advance for your advice. |

Re: Need advice buying a golf cart
All carts have their weaknesses and strengths. Gas carts have their clutches and belts and compression issues... electric carts have their engineering flaws too.
If you are dead set on gas get something as new as you can find in your budget. If you are going electric do the same thing. Newer carts have engineering advances. There is no reason you cannot do what you are askign with a modern 48v golf cart. I hope this helps |

Re: Need advice buying a golf cart
A different approach is to find an older non running gas cart. These can often be bought for a couple of hundred $'s particularly this time of the year. Then either fix the original engine or do an engine swap and you will have a cart you know well for not a ton of money. All this assumes you have some mechanical ability. But older gas carts are pretty simple machines and as long as it is one with CCW 4 stroke engine there are many options for which way to go. P.S. I am partial to yamahas because of their sturdy mechanical systems.

Re: Need advice buying a golf cart
I have 8 carts, all but one of which are vintage. 4 are gas and 4 are electric. To be honest, if you aren't driving distances then, and this is just my opinion, the electrics are the way to go. I tow all kinds of things with two of my electric carts that I would never tow with my gas ones. The gas transmissions just won't handle it. When set up right the electric ones can provide a lot more torque for pulling hills than do the gassers. Gas is better for distance for obvious reasons.
48v doesn't really cost any more than 36v at this point. Again, just one guy's opinion. |

I agree with the electric thing. It's quiet & always ready if you monitor battery charge. and no fuel to haul.

If I were in your situation I would look for an older gas Carryall. Aluminum frame, easy to work on, won't need a trailer to haul your stuff.
Just my 2 cents. |
