Default 2002 club car FE290cc motor just wont run

I have a new rebuilt motor that I purchased about within 30 days.
I installed the motor, and ran fine for about 10 days. I took it to the lake house and drove it around and it just died. I pulled the air filter hose off the carb and put my hand in front of the carb where the air filter hose hooks to the carb and tried to start it and it was blowning air out of the carb towards my hand. Does this suppose to happen? if not what does that mean? Can anyone help me please?

Blowing air out the carb sounds like a valve problem. Does it do that consistantly when you turn the motor over?

yes...if it's a valve problem, what would cause this and how can I fix it?

First thing is to do a compression test, second (if compression is down) would be to contact the engine re-builder. If that fails or you feel so inclined, remove the valve cover and do a visual inspection. If the re-builder is a stand up guy he should help since the engine is so fresh.

What should be the compression?

The valves are retained by collets, it's possible they have fallen out somehow or the valve stem may be broken. Hard to tell without opening it up. Compression should be well over 150psi on a fresh engine.
Please let us know how this all pans out for you. It's nice to have solutions that might help others in due course.

Took the valve cover off and one of the rocker arms was kicked to the side and off the lifter. What would have caused this?

I've seen that happen when the valve clearance had been set to large. It allowed the lifter to move around too much and eventually slide off the valve. Another instance was when the nylock nut used to retain the lifter had failed. Same result. Is it possible that your rebuilder overlooked tightening the nut down ? In any event, unless something else is badly amiss it sounds like an easy fix albeit frustrating.
