Default Vanguard 23HP

ok i keep reading about all the power of these engines.....i bought one NEW and really disappointing, 97 club car 6:1 gears,22x11 tires, keeps fouling plugs (rich) black smoke it will run 35mph at 3200 , but just no power or just not what i expected, think maybe to high gear i thought with that much HP it wouldnt be a problem, dies going up a little grade , but plugs turn BLACK after 5 min running

Sounds to me like that is really high gearing to be running 35 at 3200 RPM.....but still Id think a 23 HP Vanny should turn that setup easier. Is it stock? Governor? Rev kit? Which clutch do you have?

Choke open all the way? If it's stock with a governor, you're missing out on a lot...

I agree, once the governor is taken off there's a huge difference

Something has to be wrong here. Even with 6:1 gearing it should be peeling tires in gravel/dirt. If it's fouling plugs I'd be checking the fuel mixture etc and the choke.

You can temporarily disable it until you get the rev kit. Just don't rev it past 4500 rpm. Get a tachometer if you don't have one already, just so you know your rpm. Once you get the rev kit you can rev to 5500 or so.

Make sure the exhaust or airbox is not restricted, not very common for them to run rich without a reason all these stock lawn engines are never rich or the epa would own them.

If you run the governor on the engine you have to make sure it shifts before you hit the governor. For example if the governor kicks in at 3500 and your clutch goes up to 3700 before it shifts you will get no power out of it. Even if your belt/clutches are messed up causing it, it wont work well that way.

That said most stock engines don't have much power when they rev high that just allows better top speed with a rev kit and you don't damage the engine. But at lower speeds if the clutch works right you should have a lot of power with a 23hp.
