Did you have your multi meter on volts or amps??? You should never get sparks hooking up a multimeter.

Are you sure that's all you did? This should not cause sparks even if the meter was on the wrong setting.

I almost immediately responded, "of course that's all I did"... but you know...I don't want to rule anything out. I am 99.9% sure the key was off, 99.9% sure the multimeter was on volts (200 setting), and 99.9% sure I put the pos test lead on the pos terminal in the chain and the neg test lead on the neg terminal. I will try again after sun up.

I'm going to say it again that there is no way that I can think of that simply connecting the multimeter is going to cause sparks unless the meter is internally dead shorted...

But in looking at your picture I do see what appears to be rotten and swollen cables with blue corrosion on them. The blue color is from the copper (WIRE) being attacked under the insulation by the acid. You likely have very high resistance in your cables along with crappy connections either of which will cause sparks and/or melt down if not worse. You NEED to replace those cables and clean your batteries up...

Thanks again for responding. Do you have a recommendation for a vendor for cables for a 48v? I will do that immediately.

I don't recommend trying again until you read your multi-meter owners manual and ensure the leads are in the correct ports to measure volts. You may have fried your meter.

As most reading this already know... I have the lead in the wrong port of the multimeter. That corrected here are the readings L to R, top to bottom (from drivers side: 8.42, 8.44 / 8.43 / 8.44 / 8.51, 8.49

Overall: 50.7

Well, after lots of cleaning, 2 new batteries, a set of new cables, and 4 new light bulbs the cart is running great. All I have to do now is replace the tires and it will be all set.
