Would this work to show amp draw of a motor.
http://cgi.ebay.com/UP8135-BLUE-LED-...ht_1602wt_1138
I was wondering if you wired this bad boy onto the motor power mounts on a resistor cart if it would show the amp draw by the motor. Or if you had a controller cart where would you have to wire it. Thanks guys. Galloway |

That particular one needs a 500A shunt resistor. If you look at different ones on eBay, some come with the shunt. You'll also need a suitable power source, typically 6 - 15V dc, but some need +/-5V dc.

Re: Would this work to show amp draw of a motor.
Nice avatar by the way.
Will the ones with the shunt show the power draw on the batteries? I run a external 12 deep cycle battery to run my lights, etc. so having a 12v source for the meter will not be an issue. I was just wondering where in the wiring I needed to wire something like this if I wanted to be a super geek. Thanks for the help Galloway |

OK, here's a stolen diagram that shows how to do it.
Basically, put the shunt in series with the batteries or the motor and then connect the signal input of the meter across the shunt terminals. |

I've got one but haven't installed it yet. Still contemplating.

Re: Would this work to show amp draw of a motor.
Just a thought? Doesn't the shunt resistance have to match meter? Last meter I got had matching shunt ( cost over twice as much for shunt than meter ) and I had to specify which meter before ordering according to supplier? Shunt was installed in line between batterys and solenoid.

The ones we're looking at are sold as a pair (meter & shunt) on eBay, but a fair comment.

That diagram would only show the amp draw of the resister if not mistaken.

Re: Would this work to show amp draw of a motor.
The current will be constant across all devices in series, i.e. the motor, shunt and batteries.
