Possibly something restricting flow at the muffler. Rich on these generally means restricted air flow someplace, intake/filter, or muffler closed off. Crushed tailpipe, mud dobber nest in the exhaust pipe, etc. Since it is 4 stroke, not likely oil build-up.
Another possibility is poorly adjusted carb linkages that don't allow the carb to open all the way, or not open and close at the correct timing. Carb open on shut off causes backfire. I had one fight me due to the square plastic cable retaining clip near the carb simply wasn't fully snapped into the steel mounting bracket.
