Here we go.

Seems when someone asks about it folks get all excited about cutting what you want off of it from one end, then having it re-splined. If done correctly, however, you can remove the length you don't want from the center and re-weld it AT YOUR OWN RISK because if you don't do it right it can be UNSAFE. (Gotta put in the disclaimer, I'm sure you know these things, but one can never be too careful)

Here's the info from Pachanga90:

If you get a weldable shaft collar(about 2" long)you can cut the shaft in the center, remove the amount you need shortened, then reassemble the shaft. Be sure to center each half in the collar(1" each). If you aren't an experienced welder have someone who is weld the shaft for you.(I wouldn't suggest a cheapie 110volt welder for this, you need a good, well penetrated weld, this is your life you are playing with). If the collar is for example,1/4" wall, then get some spacers also 1/4" and lay the shaft in a piece of straight angle-iron to act as a "V"-block so it comes out straight. Then just cut down your cover-tube the same amount. Hope this helps.
