I often wonder why I do these paint projects.... But, since I had 2 successive days of good weather in November, I dove into the deep end on this one! For anyone wanting to shoot a tri-coat on a golf cart, it's worth it in the end - IMHO. This is the same mix you see on the Ford Platinum pick up trucks.
I called a paint buddy who let me know that the tri-coat order is base / tinted clear / clear. The challenge was that I was shooting many coats (16 in all!) of essentially the same color, so coverage / overlap was difficult to see. I sprayed:
- K36 high build primer (3 coats), this showed up some blemishes...
- Icing spot filler to fill in the blemishes
- DP48 mixed as a sealer (white, 3 coats)
- JBP base color (white, 4 coats)
- JBP tinted clear / transparent coat, pearl based with metallic look to it (white pearl, 4 coats)
- 2021 clear (3 coats)
That's a lot of paint, and I really (!) wanted to shoot a 4th coat of clear but the temps were dropping and just couldn't risk the whole thing sagging down the sides. :( Just a couple of pics of the final coat of clear, it was still wet and flowing out - but I was out of time and needed to get home.
