They are safety devices that protect the solenoid and controller from unwanted voltage spikes and contact damage. The resistor is not polarity sensitive in fact both large terminals of the solenoid are the same polarity.
The diode is polarity sensitive. the diode will have a band on it... the banded end is positive. it must be put on the positive side of the activation circuit = the 2 small posts.

Is there any part of this you are not clear on?
