I can't understand why small engines have to be so loud. You can get an old Cadillac 500cid engine whisper quite but from leaf blowers to rhinos the engines are loud. I guess the muffler restriction kills small displacements.
I had a buddy that added an additional homemade muffler to his lawn riding lawn mower. He took a piece of pipe that would fit over mower muffler end, drilled holes randomly through it(30-40 holes), pipe went through a large can(coffee can size), and packed the can with steel wool. I never heard it but he said it reduced sound by about 50%. It would seem to me it should not reduce power because of the staight through design.
