I did the same thing as you, removed my battery pack for my first general cleaning. I set my batteries aside but did not interconnect them. I kept them charged with a 2A -12 volt charger and just moved charging cables around monitoring with a meter. When a battery reached 8.6 volts I took it off the charge. I used my phone as a timer and reminder.
