The pump runs of crankcase pressure, not compression - and it seems you have that going for You. What you also did (other than likely running out of gas which started the trouble) was pull the fuel lines and blew them clean, which likely GURANTEED that you lost the prime (these older 2-stroke pumps hate to self-prime) ...

Pull the fuel line going OUT of the pump, then open the gas tank. Wrap a rag around the filler neck to create a seal, and either blow into the tank to pressurize fuel up into the pump or do it extremely carefully with an air gun at low pressure (if using an air gun it's prob easier to use the cleanout bung - smaller hole to seal)
