If there are burn marks on the armature the motor needs to be removed and taken apart.

Do you have both rear wheels off the ground or just one? If it’s both, lower one side so only one wheel is off the ground and spin that one and see if it still only spins sometimes. Listen for any grinding or clunking noise. Could have had a mechanical failure in the transaxle or the motor coupler stripped.
