I haven't mounted one on the plastic so I can't say if it gets too hot.

I have mine (as do a lot of others) mounted on the steel plate behind the front suspension. This is very solid and also acts as a heat sink. It is convenient to the dash wiring, especially if you are running it through the key (either with a 5 wire converter or a relay on a 4 wire converter).
