If your parts house can't help you find a simple coil I think you should find another parts house. As per my PM to you, Not all coils are oil filled. If it's an oil filled coil mount it horizontally, if not them mount it however you want.

You can use many different coils in the conversion. Tell them you want a coil for a 1977 Chevy Nova with the 250, I-6 (....lots of options here.) This is what the I6 coil will look like and it may be cheaper than a universal round. I am not sure what it cost. No resistor to worry about, no oil and mount it however you want. This coil was/is used on MANY different engines GM produced over the years and you should have no problems finding one. Many people have done this conversion with excellent results.
