Does it sound like a chattering noise that seems to go away when you accelerate? Is it worse while coasting or when you're giving it partial throttle? You may have a worn guide ring in the motor or worn splines on the motor, depending on which style motor you have. What's the golf cart serial number? This will help us to identify the year so we can point you in the right direction. I doubt it's a low oil issue. There are two plugs on the differential, a fill plug and a drain plug. Remove the upper plug and a little bit of oil should drip out. It's supposed to be filled to the fill plug.
