As usual, I don't have the patients to do just one thing at a time! It seems to be fixed, but I did several things and any one or combination could have done the trick.

The air filter was definitely leaking air as part of the edge seal was torn. Replaced that. The clear tube off the bottom of the carb was oily and clogged. Cleaned that. The spark plug had black soot on it, so I replaced it with a non-resister type spark plug which also is a little hotter than the resister type per the gal a Auto Zone. Knock on wood, it's may be running okay now. Thanks for all the help!
