congrats for getting it running. I am all for saving old stuff rather than replacing when possible. If you know someone that has one of those ultrasonic cleaners, it would probably help clear out some of the rust you could not reach. I have one and it works wonders for cleaning carbs, etc. Maybe a local auto repair shop in your area has one? Keep going and hopefully you will have it back in service soon.
