I chopped 3" out of mine last winter. I figured the best place was in the middle on the front, and just 3" off the top of the back. For the 3" section in front, I drilled 2 holes near the end of each section, cut a piece of steel for the inside, then plug welded it, and then tried to weld the crack between the two (some worked, some burnt thru a bit).

In the end, my rookie welding seemed to do the job. I was able to load tons of gear in the roof rack, even a surf board on top. But it didn't survive my drunk buddy booze cruisin the cart down a grassy hill & rolling it up on the side. After we got done laughin our buts off, we tipped it back on the tires. The only damage to the cart was the welded windshield frame.
