I don't have the same cart as you, but I did move my axle back 8". It worked great, much more stability and better ride, and also more room in the engine compartment.

I did mine by stretching the swingarm. I cut the swingarm in half, installed a pipe inside the tubing and welded it in. It was really easy to do actually.

Moving the attaching points will also work. I haven't seen that done yet, but it sounds like a logical way to do it.

One side affect....the rear brake cables will be too short. You'll either have to extend the front cable mounting point, using some kind of rod from the pedal, or you'll need to use longer cables. On mine I just used two passenger side cables and it worked out.
