You can do the solid state conversion first, then switch over to 48v later. That's how I did it. (it was in an effort to ease my wife into the financial end of the upgrades)
I only had to swap out a diode at the solenoid when I did the voltage conversion, other than batteries and charger of course. The solid state conversion at 36v made a noticeable improvement on mine. The 48v conversion and Admiral Mot-a1 made it even better!!
