8 years isn't that old in terms of electric motors. I would do the 48V conversion with a 400 AMP controller first, then if you feel you really need the motor after that, send it out. Unfortunately, your only options for the 48V is either changing out the batteries to 8 volt or adding the extra 2 in the bagwell.
