Trouble is the surface charge. When charging the 48v pack it will get to 59+ volts in the finish phase. So if he hops in and hits the gas 30 minutes after a charge cycle completed then his cart that is set up for 42+v will see 59-ish volts. Or, he may have a controller and solenoid that are 48v compatible and be OK.
It'll either be fine or let all the magic smoke out of the controller/solenoid.
I know it's not answering your question, maybe someone else can chime in that knows this stuff.
You do want to be careful with the max RPM of the motor, I don't know how fast he was going on 48v. There are a few members who've exploded a motor by spinning it over 6k and it normally takes out the controller when the motor goes like that.
