Also keep in mind these cars are meant to run wide-open most of the time. The lower speeds just expel the difference as resistor heat and are not intended for full-time use. Mostly to just get going or intermittent use. The heat from the resistors ends up melting them.

There was a later model version that still uses resistors but only had one solenoid up front with the resistor module behind the batteries. This one is more robust. Probably less modification needed as well.
