Wrong order, check electrolyte and add distilled water only if the plates are expose and then only add enough to cover plates.
Charge batteries fully, then fill to proper level.

The electrolyte expands (Grows) during the charge process and the cells may be over filled if topped off while partially discharged. Also can bubble over while charging.

Also, how often do you charge your batteries?
They ought to be recharged after each use.
