They make what looks like a thick hard cardboard like gasket material that I've used to make exhaust gaskets for a large generator I have. It seemed to work well and didn't burn at all. That might be a good alternative to use. I agree that that the rubberized stuff may not work too well for this type of gasket.

I do know that on my '94, there is an adjustment that you can make to vary the amount of oil being injected. When I got mine running for the first time, it did smoke badly. When I adjusted it down (it was turned way up), the smoking stopped. Hopefully, this is the issue with yours.
